This knowledge of life is built upon the understanding of the five elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth). When these elements combine they create three governing principles, or doshas. These are Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire with a little water), and Kapha (earth and water). Everything may be categorized according to its proportion of the doshas, including our mind-body (and skin) type.
